What is Epigenetic Hair Follicle Testing and What Can it Tell Us About Hair Loss?

Hair loss client visits her Trichologist, Cali at Root Alchemist, to have some testing done.

Epigenetic hair follicle testing is a wellness screening that uses a small hair sample to flag areas where your body may need support - like nutrient markers, gut health, immune function, and environmental or food stressors. It's a fantastic tool that I use in my practice, alongside your health history and scalp imaging, to determine the best starting point on your hair restoration journey.

What Is Epigenetic Hair Follicle Testing?

Epigenetics is the study of how stress, food, sleep, and your environment influence the way your body expresses its genes. Your genes are the blueprint for your body. Epigenetics is the on/off & volume up/down, which is why it gets used in conversations about hair, since shedding so often tracks with what the body has been through lately.

The test uses just a 4 hairs (even your eyebrows will do!) to generate a report on areas where your body may be under strain. Think of the report as a map of places worth asking better questions about.

How Does the Test Work?

Your hair is a record of what your body has been dealing with. The cells in your hair bulb (how the hair is connected to our scalp) directly experience everything your body is. After collecting a hair sample, it's sent out to the lab for analysis. In the most simple terms: the technology measures how your hair follicle is responding to specific frequencies**.** That data is then taken and placed in an extensive report for you, organized by body system and priority level.

This is different from - and not a replacement for - a blood test, which measures the amount of one specific thing currently in your body, like iron or vitamin D, on the day you're drawn. This report flags areas where the pattern suggests your body may be under strain and tells me where to start asking questions. It also is able to look over a 3 month period because that is the length a hair can retain environmental information.

What Does Epigenetic Hair Testing Look At?

The report covers immune system function, gut health, environmental stressors, food stressors, nutrient markers, and body systems that may need extra support. None of those are diagnoses. They are flags. We are OPTIMIZING with this.

Say you've been shedding for six months and your labs came back normal. If the report points toward gut health and a handful of nutrient markers, I know to start asking about digestion, how you've been eating, and what's been stressing your system lately. Those conversations turn up things a microscope never will, and they usually change what we do first.

Who Should Consider Epigenetic Hair Follicle Testing?

The test tends to be most useful if you've been shedding for a long time, you've already worked your way through the supplement aisle with mixed results, or you have a lot going on at once, like hormone changes, digestive trouble, or an autoimmune condition. A longer, more tangled history is where an extra layer of information earns its keep.

If your shedding started recently and has an obvious trigger, like surgery, a rough few months, or rapid weight loss, you may not need it at all. The Hair & Scalp Analysis alone may give us plenty to work with, and we can always add testing later if the picture stays murky.

Epigenetic Hair Follicle Testing FAQ

Does epigenetic hair testing replace bloodwork? No. Bloodwork measures what is circulating in your blood on the day of your draw, and it is still the right tool for diagnosing things like thyroid issues or anemia. If your labs came back normal and you are still shedding, the test can help us look at what bloodwork tends to miss.

Do I need the test to work with a trichologist? Not at all. If you aren't sure that it's a fit with the issues you're currently experiencing, shoot me a message and we can talk through the details. You can always add it to your treatment plan down the line as well!

How do I add the test to my appointment? It is booked in advance as an add-on to your Hair & Scalp Analysis, so your results are ready before you come in. You choose it when you schedule.

What happens after my hair follicle test results come back? We go through them together at your appointment and pick the first few things to support, based on what you can realistically fit into your life right now. The plan is built around your budget and your schedule, and we adjust it as your hair responds.
