What To Expect At Your First Hair Loss Appointment With A Holistic Trichologist (It's Not Scary)

Holistic trichologist in Hartland, WI reviewing a client's scalp during a first appointment consultation

You've probably done this search at midnight.

Something like "do I need to see a trichologist" or "is my hair loss bad enough to see someone." Maybe you closed the tab before you got an answer, because you weren't sure what would even happen next. That's normal. Most people who arrive in my studio started with that same late night search and a little bit (sometime a LOT) of nerves.

So let's clear it up. Here is exactly what happens when you come see me for your first hair loss appointment - your Hair & Scalp Analysis - from the moment you walk in to what happens a few months later.

What Happens During Your First Hair Loss Appointment

First, we talk. Not a rushed form you fill out sitting in cold, sterile waiting room. We sit down together and go through your history, your daily life, your stress, your sleep, what you eat, what's changed for you in the last year.

Hair does not thin or shed for no reason. It is almost always your body telling you something else needs attention first, and I need the full picture before I can help you make sense of any of it.

The Scalp Analysis Part

Then we look at your scalp up close. I use a microscopic imaging tool that shows me things you can't see in a mirror or during a blow dry session at your normal salon. This isn't painful and it isn't invasive. Think of it more like getting a very detailed photo of your scalp and hair follicles, so we can actually see what's going on instead of guessing.

I'll ask that you arrive with clean hair (no more than a day since your last wash) styled the way you normally wear it. That gives me the clearest possible look at your everyday scalp situation.

How We Build Your Hair Loss Treatment Plan

From there, we build a plan together. I'm ready to meet you exactly where you are on the readiness scale. Some clients want a fully natural approach. Some are already using something like Minoxidil or Finasteride and want support alongside that. Most people land somewhere in the middle, and that's completely fine. I'm not here to talk you out of anything or push you toward one single path. My job is to help you understand your options so you can choose what actually fits your life, your budget, and your timeline.

When you book your Hair & Scalp Analysis, you'll also have the option to add on a hair follicle test for a deeper look. It checks for nutritional gaps, environmental stressors, and other imbalances from the last 90 days. If you add this at booking, your results are ready by the time we sit down together, so we go over everything in that same appointment instead of scheduling a separate visit just for results.

Depending on what we see during your Hair & Scalp Analysis, I may also recommend DNA testing. This is a test specific to hair & scalp issues. It's a really great option if you are considering/using a prescription oral or topical medication. It also looks at nutrient deficiencies and which professional treatments would be most effective with your body's specific chemistry.

What Happens After Your First Visit

Once your plan is in place, you're not showing up every week for the next six months. Generally, rechecks happen every three months but you're always welcome to reach out with questions or concerns in the interim. Three months is enough time to actually see change and adjust course if we need to, without turning your life into a part time job managing your scalp.

If you've already tried a few things on your own, read a dozen conflicting articles, and been told your labs look normal even though you don't feel normal, this is probably why you're still reading. You don't need to have it all figured out before you book. You just need to be ready to start asking the right questions, and that's exactly what the first appointment is for.

A Few Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a trichologist or a dermatologist? A dermatologist treats skin conditions broadly. A trichologist focuses specifically on hair and scalp, and looks at the whole picture, including things like diet, hormones, and stress, not just what's happening on the surface. Plenty of clients see both, and that's completely fine!

Does the scalp imaging hurt? Oh gosh, no! It isn't invasive and it doesn't hurt. It's closer to a photoshoot for your head than a medical procedure.

Do I need a referral to book a hair loss appointment with a trichologist? No. You can reach out and book with me directly.

What if I'm already using Minoxidil or Finasteride for my hair loss? That's completely fine. I'm not anti-medication, and plenty of my clients are already using something conventional. We can build a plan that works alongside it.

How often will I need to come in after my initial hair loss appointment? Once a plan is started, rechecks typically happen every three months.
