Autoimmune Disorders, Inflammation & Hair Loss

Woman holding hair brush with hair loss from autoimmune disorder

Autoimmune disorders and chronic inflammation play a much bigger role in hair and scalp health than most people realize. And when inflammation is left unaddressed, the hair is often one of the first places it shows up.

My approach is never about quick fixes. It’s about understanding why your body is reacting the way it is and supporting it back into balance.

Autoimmune Hair Loss: The Connection Between Inflammation & Hair Health

Autoimmune disorders occur when the immune system becomes overactive and begins attacking healthy tissue. This constant state of inflammation can disrupt the hair growth cycle, weaken follicles, and impair the scalp’s ability to function optimally.

Some of the most common autoimmune-related conditions I see affecting hair include:

  • Lupus

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

  • Psoriasis

  • Thyroid disorders

When inflammation is present, it often shows up through changes in the hair and scalp such as excessive shedding, breakage, thinning, poor-quality hair, or Alopecia Areata. These symptoms are your body’s way of communicating that something deeper needs support.

If you have one of these conditions, or suspect you might, it’s incredibly important to pay attention to changes in your hair and scalp early. Early intervention is key, and addressing concerns sooner rather than later often leads to better, more sustainable results.

Alopecia Areata: Why Controlling Inflammation Comes First

Alopecia Areata (AA) can be one of the most emotionally challenging autoimmune reactions. The natural response is to focus on regrowing hair, but regrowth cannot happen sustainably until inflammation is calmed and the trigger is identified.

AA and other forms of autoimmune hair loss are rarely caused by just one thing. That’s why we look at the entire picture.

Some of the most common triggers I investigate include:

  • Mold exposure

  • Lyme disease

  • Viral overload

  • Gut inflammation or imbalance

  • Bacterial overgrowth

  • Heavy metals

  • Genetic predispositions

To identify these triggers, I often use Hair Follicle Testing and, when appropriate, ALO DNA testing. These tools help us stop guessing and uncover what’s driving the inflammatory response.

Nutrition, Gut Health & Inflammation

Gut health and nutrition are foundational when working with autoimmune conditions and chronic inflammation.

Your gut plays a major role in regulating inflammation, supporting immune function, and absorbing the nutrients your hair depends on. If the gut isn’t functioning optimally, even the most supportive supplements or dietary changes may fall short.

Anti-inflammatory and Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) approaches can significantly reduce overall inflammation and help lessen its effects on the hair and scalp. While these diets can feel overwhelming at first, even small, consistent swaps in everyday foods can create meaningful change over time.

When you work with me to support your gut health and reduce inflammation, I focus on practical, personalized strategies tailored to your body. This often includes:

  • Personalized dietary changes

  • Probiotics

  • Targeted supplementation

  • Stress management

Hair Follicle Testing can help pinpoint exactly how your gut and body systems are functioning, allowing us to create a plan that supports your unique needs.

Stress: An Often-Overlooked Trigger

Stress is one of the most common triggers for autoimmune flare-ups, and it can directly and indirectly affect your hair. Even without an autoimmune condition, chronic stress alone can disrupt the hair growth cycle.

Supportive stress-management practices I often recommend include:

  • Gratitude practices

  • Stress adaptogens

  • Gentle movement or exercise

  • Yoga

  • Deep breathing

  • Spending time outdoors

Nervous system support is hair support.

Scalp Treatments for Inflammation

Targeted scalp treatments designed to calm inflammation can be incredibly supportive for those dealing with autoimmune-related hair concerns.

Regular treatments can help:

  • Reduce scalp inflammation

  • Support follicle health

  • Minimize excessive shedding

  • Protect against breakage

When the scalp environment is supported, the hair has a much better chance to thrive.

Ready to Find the Root Cause?

If you’re struggling with hair loss or scalp issues and aren’t sure where to start, a Hair & Scalp Analysis is the first step. This one-hour appointment allows us to explore your hair history, health background, stressors, and lifestyle in depth. Using advanced scalp imaging and optional testing, we work together to uncover what’s happening beneath the surface and create a personalized plan that aligns with your body, your life, and your goals.

No two hair journeys are the same and you don’t have to navigate yours alone. I’m here to help you uncover the root cause and support true, lasting healing.
